Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he liked taking part in numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games while playing his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little bit and moved to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were tough as he would play countless hours and lose most times. He made some extra money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus more on poker.
The real improvement in his skills happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would regularly challenge one another. Howard had access into a number of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his cunning thinking abilities. He used these strategy ideas in the game of NL holdem.
Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. She is one of the strongest women players the poker arena today. He moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
