Gus Hansen enjoyed an amazing year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only one to make it to the final game in 3 of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You might remember one of the biggest pots in big stakes poker recorded history against Daniel Negreanu. Gus secured a big pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has made many tv poker appearances and is thought to be one of the strongest gamblers around the world. While gambling on net poker, another side of Hansen has been seen. He often plays in the 200/400 NL max buy in of Forty Thousand dollars. Gus usually buys in for the minimum of $16, 000 and plays very weak. He waits patiently for a decent hand and then goes all-in. I accept that Gus is an amazing poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400no limit. Unless Gus is bankrupt, he has little or no reason to settle at the table with the minimum buy in.

Buying in for the min takes most of the ability out of deep stack poker. Gus is presumed to be one of the best players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy-in for the full amount. I think television can skew our perception of the real world every now and then. The best poker players anywhere in the world might be guys you have never heard of. Gus can be seen competing in online poker on Full Tilt. He commonly plays in big stakes omaha eight-or-better and hold’em. Gus Hansen has proven himself as a competition player. Can he back up his abilities in cash games?
