Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he loved participating in numerous card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and headed to New York to participate in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he would play countless hours and lose most times. He earned some additional money by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he possibly could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and concentrate even more on the game.
The actual advancement in his game happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would regularly compete against each other. He was able to access some of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL holdem.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard moved to Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the successive decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
