Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he loved betting on different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and headed to New York to participate in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he would play extensive hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus attention even more on poker.

The actual improvement in his abilities began when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would frequently challenge one another. Howard had access into some of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his strategic thinking abilities. He used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the strongest women players the poker arena ever. He relocated to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
